How do I collect a stool sample for gut microbiome analysis?

To ensure the sample is suitable for analysis and the results are reliable, follow these stool sample collection steps:

Preparation

  • If you are taking or have recently taken antibiotics, do not stop treatment prescribed by your doctor. We recommend providing the sample at least 8 weeks after completing the antibiotic course.
  • If possible and consistent with your healthcare professional’s instructions, avoid probiotics for 3 weeks before providing the sample.
  • After an acute gastrointestinal infection or food poisoning, we recommend waiting at least 3 weeks before providing the sample.

Before collection

  • Check that the kit packaging is intact and has not expired. Do not use the kit if the packaging or sample tube is damaged, has been opened before, or solution has leaked from the tube.
  • Empty your bladder to prevent urine from entering the sample.
  • Put on disposable gloves and prepare a clean surface for the sample tube and collection stick.
  • Remove the sample tube from its packaging and place it with the stick on the clean surface next to the toilet.
  • Place the stool collection paper over the toilet bowl and attach it to both sides of the seat as shown in the instructions included with the kit.
  • Sit so the stool lands directly on the collection paper without touching toilet water or urine.

Collecting the sample

  • Unscrew the sample tube and use the supplied stick to collect small amounts of stool from three different places.
  • Put the stick into the sample tube and stir for about 30 seconds until the sample is evenly mixed with the solution in the tube.
  • Once the sample is evenly mixed, break the stick at the marked point and leave it in the sample tube.
  • Screw the sample tube closed tightly and clean its outside if needed.

After collection

  • Label the sample tube with the date and time of collection.
  • Store the sample tube at room temperature according to the conditions on the packaging, and bring it to the Anti-Aging Institute clinic as soon as possible.
  • Before bringing the sample to the Anti-Aging Institute clinic, make sure you have completed the questionnaire available by scanning the QR code on the stool collection kit packaging.
  • Keep your test ID so you can access your results later.

Important

  • The analysis provides descriptive information about the composition of the gut microbiome. It is not intended to diagnose diseases, determine disease risk, or select treatments or medicines.
  • The results do not replace a consultation with a doctor. If you have acute or concerning health symptoms, do not wait for the results; seek medical advice.

Information about receiving and understanding your results

How to receive and read your gut microbiome analysis results:

Receiving your results

  • Results are provided to the customer. They are sent to a doctor only with the customer’s consent.
  • The individual results report is emailed to the address provided by the customer when they bring the stool sample to the Anti-Aging Institute clinic.
  • Results are usually available within 4–8 weeks after the Anti-Aging Institute clinic receives the sample.

What the results report includes

  • Bioinformatically calculated indicators of microbiome functions and associations described in scientific literature, such as those related to metabolic pathways and the gut–skin or gut–brain axes. These are not clinical predictions or assessments of disease risk.
  • General information about lifestyle, diet, physical activity, sleep, and stress management, which you can discuss with a specialist if you wish.
  • A microbiome summary covering its overall structure and dominant taxonomic groups.
  • Diversity indicators with a descriptive comparison to reference population data.
  • An overview of individual bacterial species with a brief explanation in the context of scientific literature and microbiome composition.

How to read the results

  • Start with the summary, which highlights the main information.
  • Consider diversity in the context of diet, lifestyle, medications, and sample collection conditions. The analysis is not intended to assess symptoms; consult a doctor if you have health concerns.
  • Review individual bacterial species. A higher or lower relative value alone does not indicate disease and is not a diagnosis. You can consult a specialist if you have questions.
  • The comparison with reference population data is descriptive and does not establish a diagnosis or disease risk.
  • Read the methods and limitations section at the end of the report to understand what this analysis can and cannot show.
  • Book a consultation with our specialists, who can explain the report, discuss general diet and lifestyle questions, and answer questions about the results and their meaning.

What the analysis does and does not show

  • Each individual result provides a snapshot of microbiome composition and diversity. The microbiome can change with diet, lifestyle, medication use, and changes in health. Repeat tests at intervals of at least 3 months allow a descriptive comparison of changes over time. Analysis of four samples may provide a broader long-term comparison of more stable and changing features of microbiome composition.
  • The results reflect descriptive data and associations observed in scientific literature, not cause-and-effect relationships. This is not a diagnostic test, does not determine disease risk, and does not replace a doctor’s consultation or clinical tests.
  • For a broader long-term comparison, you can take four tests at intervals of at least 3 months. This allows comparison of changes in microbiome composition but does not create a diagnostic indicator.
